OBITUARY = WILLIAM R. BEAL
William Roy (Bill) Beal, 98, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026 to join his wife, Madolyn. Bill was born August 8, 1927 and was raised in Nashville. He attended Inglewood Elementary and lsacc Litton High School, class of 1945. During World War II he volunteered to serve with The United States Maritime Service, Merchant Marine. He served his
13-week basic training in St. Petersburg, Florida and qualified as a junior engineer. The day after he completed basic training he was sent to Gulfport, Mississippi and assigned to his ship serving in the Pacific Zone for the next 14 months. Coming back to Nashville, he accepted a four-month temporary position with AT&T. Later he joined the Nashville branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta where he spent the next 10 years. When the Korean War broke out Bill enlisted into the118th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard knowing the wing had already received notification of activation. He spent the next 21 months in the Air Force serving in Memphis and Shaw AFB in South Carolina, achieving the rank of Sergeant.
Being honorably discharged, he returned to the bank and attended a University of Tennessee sponsored accounting class and the bank assigned him to their general ledger desk. He left the bank in 1957 and was employed by the Federal Home Loan Bank in Cincinnati, traveling Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio auditing savings and loan associations. After 3 years of traveling, he was back in Nashville at the Home Federal Savings and Loan Associations for 5 years as their accounting officer and manager of savings department. He then moved his family to Athens, Tennessee where he was Vice President/Treasurer of the Athens Federal Savings and Loan for 10 years. He applied for and was selected for the managing position of the then new Second Federal Savings and Loan being started in Oak Ridge. After nine years, Second Federal merged with Home Federal Bank of Knoxville. Bill stayed for three years as branch manager and left to join the FDIC where he spent the next 10 years. He was assigned to the Resolution Trust Corporation, a subsidiary that was set up by the FDIC for the closing operation of Savings and Loans. For the next 5 years he traveled the eastern half of the United States.
He spent the last 18 years of his working time with the Joyce-Meredith-Flitcroft & Normand Law firm in Oak Ridge.
Bill was also community minded. He worked with the United Way in Athens and Oak Ridge. He was a Kiwanian in Athens and Oak Ridge for 22 years with 21 years perfect attendance. He served as president of both the Athens and Atomic City Kiwanis Clubs. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Division 4 of Kiwanis and was designated as Distinguished Lieutenant Governor. While in Athens, he also served as President of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce.
He served on the board with Community Mediation Services and also served as President. He was responsible for the beginning of the Community Mediation Golf Tournament which, with the capable action of retired judge Jennings Meredith, became the Big Ed Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting Community Mediation Services.
He also served on the board of two churches: Russell Street Presbyterian Church in Nashville and the Mars Hill Presbyterian Church in Athens.
Bill was preceded in death by his father and mother, Roy and Margaret Beal and a sister, Juanita Marlin and his wife of 66 years, Madalyn Williams Beal.
He is survived by a son Stephen Terry Beal and wife Carolyn Cobb, and daughter Leigh Anne Beal Scott and husband Dr. Timothy C. Scott. Also survived by four grandchildren, Emily Beal Hyman and husband Ben, Maddie Beal Warren and Husband Lee, Ryan K. Scott and wife Julia De Green Scott all living in Knoxville and Erin Beal Scott, living in Burgos, Spain. He is also survived by a nephew Skip Marlin and wife Debbie of Port St. Joseph, Florida. He is survived by five great grandsons, William and Henry Hyman, Jackson and Fletcher Scott, and Lincoln Warren. He is survived by one great granddaughter Virginia Hyman
He did not want to forget his neighbors whom he loved including the weekly Domino Group, close friend Jack Rich, and all the employees at the JMFN law firm including those retired and passed away.
In lieu of flowers if desired, contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge, the Community Mediation Services or any Charity of your choice.
The family will be receiving friends, Wednesday, March 4, 2026 between the hours of 5:00pm – 7:00pm at the Mott-McKamey Funeral Home, 1017 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Graveside services and interment will be open to the public, Thursday, March 5, 2026 at 2:00pm at the Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens, Valor Section.
