Virgil Silver

January 9, 1923 — April 16, 2016

Virgil J. Silver, 93, was born in Celo, North Carolina, and died at his home surrounded by his family on April 16, 2016.
He was a beloved husband and a friend worth knowing. He worked at K-25, retiring after 37 years. An avid lifelong learner, family and friends were impor-tant to him and he loved them all.
Until his health declined, he was active in his Sunday School Class as well as the activities of the Central Baptist Church Sen-ior Group, including the Go-Getters and the Jubilant Jubilee Choir, volunteering wherever needed at his church. He co-sponsored several students while they were enrolled at various seminaries and always encouraged them to reach their potential.
He was an avid reader and loved to travel, but his main hobby was woodworking. He participated in Juried Craft Fairs in Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee, bringing home Blue Ribbons for his workmanship.
He was preceded in death by his parents A. L. Silver and Bertha Mae Robinson Silver; sisters Wilma Tyler and Kathleen Webb; broth-ers Myron, J.D., Herman, and Charles. Survivors include his wife Peggy Mae King Silver, sister Violet Silver Ray of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, and sister-in-law Nina Silver of Anderson, South Carolina and several nieces and nephews.
Special friends include Lolita and husband Gaylon, Andreau, Chad, Jennifer, Rachel, as well as caregivers Sam, Linda, Teslin, and Wayne.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 19, 2016, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Glenn Ellis. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Asso-ciation, 1545 Western Ave. Suite 110A, Knoxville, TN 37921 or the charity of one's choice.
