Mary Obituary

February 15, 1931 — December 24, 2013

Mary Clark "Mama" (Cook) Freels 82, of Murfreesboro, passed peacefully on Christmas Eve.

She was born to the late Almas Cook and Ethel Clark (Cook) Donnell, February 15, 1931, in Joelton, TN.

Mary was the owner of Mama Freels' Day Care in Nashville, TN until she retired. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of the children she cared for, as well as the lives of their parents. She saw each child in her care as one of her own and loved and cherished them all.

Before moving to Murfreesboro, Mary was an active member of the Foster Avenue Wesleyan Church, serving many terms on the church board and teaching Sunday School classes. In Murfreesboro, Mary was a member of the Unity Free Will Baptist Church and was seen as an inspiration to all who knew her there.

Mary was preceded in death by her eldest son, James Robert Freels, Jr; her parents, Almas and Ethel; her sisters: Alice Cook Decker (Bill); Helen Freels Larkin (Mel); Doris Freels Krueger (Eugene); and the father of her children, James Robert Freels, Sr.

She is survived by her children: Sherrie (the late Jim Freels) of Anderson, SC; Clark and Rosa of Slidell, LA; Alan and Brenda of Smyrna, TN; Kermit of Nashville, TN; Tim and Bonnie of White Bluff, TN; John and Mary (Freels) Church of Nashville, TN; and Kenneth and Helen (Freels) Johnson of Morrison, TN. She is survived by 24 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters: Alfred Cook; Kermit Freels (Dolores); Shirley Freels King (Bob); Doris Ann Freels (Willard).

Mary was a shining example of the love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She freely and tirelessly bestowed that same love to every person she met. Her beautiful smile will be missed here on this earth; however, her family rejoices in the knowledge that her soul and legacy will live on forever.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Unity Free Will Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Unity Free Will Baptist Church, 1901 Florence Rd., Murfreesboro, TN 37129.
