LeRoy Robbins Jr

July 7, 1923 — August 21, 2020

LeRoy Maupin Robbins

Beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather peacefully passed away on August 21, 2020 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

LeRoy was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1923, making him 97 years young. He loved growing up near the river and often told stories of choosing to be in his rowboat, on the river instead of in school!

In 1943, LeRoy joined the U.S. Army. He served in Okinawa and later in Korea. After he served in the Army for ten years, he came stateside to Riverdale, Maryland where he began work at the University of Maryland campus bookstore. In Maryland, he served as a member of the National Guard. LeRoy worked at the University of Maryland bookstore from 1952-1980, where he served as manager. LeRoy enjoyed being part of the University of Maryland family.

LeRoy married our mother, Wanda Freitag in 1977. They lived in College Park, Maryland together for over 30 years. LeRoy was an active member of the American Legion Post 0136 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 453. He loved to travel, work on cars, and make wooden whirligigs named Henry.

In 2016 LeRoy moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he was part of the community at Alexander Guest House. LeRoy learned a lot about Tennessee during his stay at the Guest House, but his favorite pastime was sneaking biscuits from the dining room in his shirt!

LeRoy, lovingly called "Pappy," will always be known for his gentle heart, his funny jokes and his infectious laugh. He was a voracious reader and an avid letter writer. Pappy loved his family and loved sharing pictures of them with his friends. Pappy loved dogs; he was always the one handing out "treats" under the dinner table.

Found next to LeRoy's favorite chair was a note that he left for all of us: "Greetings, Sorry I can't be with you today, I have a prior commitment! Whatever you do, think happy thoughts, laugh and love one another. Love to all, LeRoy."

LeRoy Robbins, Pappy, and Grandpa will be missed by those left behind, but we are all so grateful to have had him with us for 97 amazing years.

Godspeed Pappy

LeRoy is survived by his daughters: Sandi Tilley (Shannon) and Karen Crytzer (Predeceased, Jim); his grandchildren: Cari Knowlton (Nick), Ryan Tilley (Kelly), Robin Tilley (Andrew), Katie Crytzer (Joe Oliveri), Jimmy Crytzer (Meg), and Emmy Meredith (Ben); and his great grandchildren Winston Tilley, Owen Tilley, and Maisey Knowlton.
