Goldie Augusta Darr

March 7, 1929 — December 23, 2022

Oak Ridge

Goldie Augusta Bumpus Darr, 93, recently of Oak Ridge, TN passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, December 23, 2022 at home with her loving family including children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren surrounding her. The family was able to spend several evenings around her bedside.

She was born in Indian Mound, TN on March 7, 1929 to the late Andrew and Eloise Bumpus.  She was the wife of the late Daniel Bishop Darr who died in 1999.  She spent her adult life in Madison, TN where she and her husband raised their family. They retired to Crossville, TN where she resided happily for almost 21 years before moving to Oak Ridge, TN to be with her daughter.  She was a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church in Madison, Harmony Baptist Church in Crossville, and Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.  The church was her life and she stayed very involved as long as she was able.  She was an avid reader who loved to read and study her Bible and what she called “wholesome” books.  She enjoyed being with and talking with her immediate and extended family and viewed family to be very important.  She delighted in and was comforted to the end by the voices and noise of her great grandchildren.  She always said that she wouldn’t trade her brothers and sisters for all the riches in the world.  She was the story-teller in our family and told many stories about her siblings, even writing most of them down for her family members. She was a positive, upbeat lady who always saw the cup as half full, always had hope, and was always encouraging to family members and those she came in contact with. She exhibited wisdom and grace while never seeking the limelight and was never judgmental of others. She had an uplifting personality and always found the positive in other people.  She cared for her children and husband through sacrifice, dedication, and love. Her life was an example of knowing the humbling power of Jesus’ grace while sharing the love through her long walk with Him.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Ruth Bumpus Butts, Haskell Bumpus, Josephine Bumpus Lewis, and Browning Bumpus.

She is survived by her daughter Joan Vick (David) of Oak Ridge, TN and her son Maurice Darr (Rosyln) of Paphos, Cyprus (in Europe)--soon moving to Phnom Penh, Cambodia;  six  grandchildren: Heather Vick Powell (Nathaniel) of Knoxville, TN, Carson Vick (Alison) of Knoxville, TN,  Matthew Vick (Ashley) of Oak Ridge, TN, Alex Darr (Catharine) of Los Osos, California, Gold Darr Hood of Budapest, Hungary, and Esther Sullivan Parish (Brad) of Kingston, Tennessee; ten great grandchildren: Leila and Mabel Powell, Anna and Rachel Vick, Lucas and Norah Vick, Levi and Avery Parish all of East TN, and Caspian and James Henry Darr of California.  She is also survived by her youngest brother, Henry Bumpus of Indian Mound, Tennessee along with the following nieces and nephews: Francis Richardson (Jerry), Rachel Shepherd (Tommy), Michele Tucker Butts, David Bumpus (RoseMary), Kenny Bumpus (Georgia), Andrew Bumpus (Betsy), Sheila Bumpus Wheat (Weldon, deceased), Todd Bumpus (Amy), Melanie Bumpus Mathis (Ronnie), Laurie Bumpus Chaffin (Wayne), Heather Bumpus Genz (David), and Bethany Bumpus Romkey.  One nephew, Michael Bumpus is deceased and one niece, Rae Ann is deceased.

A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, December 30, 2022 at 12:00 p.m., Central Standard Time at Fairview Cemetery on Redtop Road in Indian Mound, TN.  Andy Bumpus, her nephew, will officiate.  If anyone wants to share a memory of her, time will be given for that. A luncheon and time for visiting with family and friends will follow immediately at Big Rock Baptist Church in Big Rock, TN catered by Rebecca Gibbs (of Bumpus Meals) and her mother RoseMary Bumpus.
