Dean Carlton Niehaus May 8, 1935 — March 26, 2026

Dean lived his life through the rhythm of the road and the soul of the music. A professional drummer by trade, he spent decades traveling the country—including his memorable time with the Andy Doll Band—leaving a trail of backbeats and stories in every city he played. He was a master of his craft, a mentor to many, and a steady, rhythmic presence for his family.

"Beyond his professional dedication, Dean shared a unique bond with his son, Jon, rooted in their mutual love for music. A permanent fixture in their shared history was the running joke, 'Does the band have a horn section?'—a phrase that followed them through years of gigs, rehearsals, and late-night talks about the craft. It was this spirit—part musician, part mentor, and always 'Road Dog'—that defined him far more than any health battle ever could."

Dean is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; the two were married for 69 years, building a lifetime of shared harmony. He is also survived by his two children: Julie Niehaus of Des Moines, IA; and Jon Niehaus and wife Holly Perkins Niehaus of Oak Ridge, TN. He also leaves behind his cherished grandsons: Spencer Niehaus of Oak Ridge, TN, and Grayson Niehaus of Knoxville, TN. Together, they carry forward the kindness, humor, and strength he instilled in them.

To honor Dean’s lifelong commitment to music, the family requests that any donations be made to the Joy of Music School in Knoxville. Your donations help provide free music lessons and instruments to children in East Tennessee, ensuring the music Dean loved so dearly continues to play on through the next generation.

"The long road ends, but the music plays on."
