Betty Reid Campbell, 85, of Oak Ridge passed away Friday December 18, 2015 at Greenfield Senior Living in Oak Ridge from Alzheimer's Disease.
She was born July 7, 1930 in Knoxville and was adopted when she was 2 years old by Wilbur and Mildred Hale. She was a 1948 graduate of old Knoxville High School. In 1978 Betty Reid married James Marshall Campbell. During their life together they visited many colleges and universities, Presidential museums and most of the National Parks in the United States and Canada. During their travels, they enjoyed most of the Oregon, California, Santa Fe Trails, Natchez Trace Route, and most of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Route. Betty Reid was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, United Methodist Women, and longtime leader of the Martha Circle. She was a board member of the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable, UT Lady Vol Boost-Her Club, Tennessee Ornithological Society, and enjoyed playing Bridge. She and Jim bird watched in 48 states, all Canadian Provinces, and all 95 counties of Tennessee. They led hundreds of Bird Events in this area and around the country. As a longtime fan of the UT Vols and Lady Vols, a member of the Knoxville Quarterback Club, The Big Orange Tip-Off Club, she and Jim traveled to numerous out-of-town regular season games, bowl and regional games and final four games and served as volunteers during several events for the UT Vols and Lady Vols over the years,
In addition to her parents, Betty Reid is proceeded in death by her first husband Byron Hunter Hinton, and birth sisters Martha Leach, Betty Gable, and Marie Barnett. Betty Reid is survived by her husband James Marshall Campbell of 37 years, sons Stephen A. Hinton and wife Tesa of Knoxville, William G. Hinton of Franklin, TN, daughter Amy Hinton Kennedy and husband Ben of Oak Ridge, seven grandchildren, Jessica D. Larabee, Scott A. Hinton and wife Tonya, Erin Hinton Brown and husband Ronnie, Lauren Hinton Clay and husband Jon, Katie R. Hinton, Anna E. Hinton, and Cameron H. Hinton, seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation of friends will be Wednesday December 30, 2015 from 1:30 to 2:30 with a funeral service officiated by Rev. Jenny Caughman at First United Methodist Church Oak Ridge, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike Oak Ridge, TN 37830. A private interment service will follow in the church's memorial gardens.
