Barbara Sosby

December 3, 1932 — February 24, 2016

Barbara Ann Sosby, age, 83, of Toccoa, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Willow Gardens in Toccoa.



Born in Stephens County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Agnes Fulbright Sosby. In her early years, she moved with her family to Oak Ridge, TN. She graduated from Oak Ridge High School and Carson Newman College. Barbara began her long tenure in education, teaching first in Bradenton, FL and then moving to Jacksonville, FL. She received her master's degree in education and administration from the University of Tennessee. While working with the Duval County Florida School System, Barbara designed the first practice reading test or functional literacy test in the nation. The test, which examines the students reading skills on the equivalent of an eighth grade level, would be used as a base requirement for education. Barbara returned to Toccoa in 2011.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church, Oak Ridge, TN.



She is survived by an Aunt, Norma Fulbright of Carrollton, GA; and by a number of cousins, including her main caregivers, Tom Dooley and Angie Garmon both of Eastanollee, GA



Funeral services will be held at 9:30am Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Whitlock Mortuary with Dr. Jimmy Lewis officiating.



Burial and graveside services will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Oak Ridge, TN at 2:30 Saturday, February 27, 2016.



The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 9am until 9:30am Saturday.



In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Toccoa - Stephens County Literacy Council, P. O. Box 63, Toccoa, GA 30577.
