Ann Hodge Shatley died Sunday, October 26, 2025 at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She was born on June18,1928 in Elizabethton, Tennessee into family with very deep roots in the Mountains of East Tennessee. Her father was Elbert C Hodge and her mother was Katie Florence Bowling. She had two brothers and three sisters who preceded her in death. She told stories about family members who served in all wars including the Civil War and others served prior to that. Her father was in World War I and suffered life long injuries from being in the trenches and being gassed with poison gas. Her husband served in the Navy the Pacific in World War II. She assisted in the war effort as a teenager by working to make parachute fabric for the allies.
In 1948 she married Harry Estle Shatley and had a daughter. She continued to work to support her family while her husband completed college on the GI bill. In March of1954 she moved to Oak Ridge where her husband began working at the Y 12 plant. She developed many friends and particularly enjoyed playing golf at Oak Ridge Country Club and playing bridge in several bridge clubs. She and her husband had season’s tickets to the University of Tennessee football games for about 40 years and loved tailgating with friends prior to every game. During this period she worked for EGG/Ortec for 17 years. She provided a loving home for several dogs and cats that she loved very much.
She is survived by her daughter Martha Ann Shatley, her son in law Steve Miller, and several nieces and nephews. During her life she had many friends but was especially close to: Barbara Adkins (Mrs. Thomas Adkins); Myra Stroud (Mrs. Dan Stroud); Merle Clark (Mrs. David Clark); Margaret Guthrie (Mrs. David Guthrie); and Peggy Lyons McNabb (Mrs. Red).
She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. A private memorial service will be held and her remains will be placed in the First Methodist Church Memory Garden close to those of her husband.
